Graduate Medical Education Regulations, GMER 2023 were issued earlier this month. Under this, NMC has suggested that counselling for the All India Quota, AIQ Seats and State Quota Seats take place under a common platform.
As per NMC officials, this is currently under process and a dialogue has been engaged with the Union Health Ministry regarding merging the NEET UG counselling.
What is the counselling system currently?
At present, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), a central authority, conducts the NEET UG Counselling for 15 percent of the AIQ seats. The counselling for the remaining 85 percent of the seats is
done by the respective state authorities.
With the current system, students are required to apply separately for the AIQ and State seats, pay a separate fee and register separately. With common counselling, the admissions process will become easier for students.
NMC Scraps MBBS Supplementary Batches
At present, the supplementary exams for MBBS students take place six months after the result declaration. However, with the new guidelines, NMC has decided to do away with the concept of supplementary batches.
With this being said, students who fail their examination will still be allowed to appear for the supplementary exams. NMC has directed authorities to conduct these university exams three to six weeks after the result declaration so that these students can join the regular batches in the same year.
