About Universiti Malaysia Sabah Fakulti Perubatan dan Sains Kesihatan

The initial purpose of founding the Islamic Religious Institute of Kedah Darul Aman was to produce Islamic professionals who could lead the community and advance Islamic knowledge. The institute also provided a pathway for graduates of religious schools to continue their studies at a higher level.

Moreover, the establishment of the Islamic Religious Institute was aimed at reviving the true tradition of Islamic scholarship for the benefit of religion, the nation, and the state. The Enactment of the Islamic Society of Kedah Darul Aman, approved by His Majesty the Sultan of Kedah and the State Legislature on 7th December 1994 under Enactment Number 4 of 1995, marked the beginning of a new chapter in Islamic higher education for Kedah.

The Islamic Religious Institute of Kedah Darul Aman sought to enhance the quality of Islamic studies and the Arabic language, producing scholars, intellectuals, and experts who are knowledgeable, capable, faithful, and responsive to the evolving needs of Islamic affairs.

In its early years, the institute offered a university-level twin study programme in partnership with Al-Azhar University in Egypt, granting degrees, diplomas, and certificates. The institute offered three majors: Sharia, Usuluddin, and Arabic, and the academic year commenced on 2nd January 1996. Arabic served as the medium of instruction, with English being a compulsory subject. The institute adopted a tenure system similar to that of Al-Azhar University, and its academic staff were selected from reputable scholars with Doctorates or equivalent qualifications.

UniSHAMS aspires to become an international centre of knowledge, producing graduates proficient in both professional and religious fields, striving for excellence in this world and the hereafter.
