The idea of establishing a university in Newcastle University Medicine upon Tyne was first proposed in 1831 by Thomas Greenhow during a lecture to the Literary and Philosophical Society. In 1832, a group of local medical professionals, including physicians George Fife and Samuel Knott, and surgeons John Fife, Alexander Fraser, and Henry Glassford Potter, began offering medical lectures in Bell’s Court as a supplement to the apprenticeship system. The inaugural session started on 1 October 1832 with eight or nine students, including John Snow, who was apprenticed to a local surgeon-apothecary. The lectures quickly gained popularity, and by 1834, they moved to the Hall of the Company of Barber Surgeons, formally establishing the School of Medicine and Surgery on 1 October 1834.

However, on 25 June 1851, a disagreement among the teaching staff led to the dissolution of the school and the formation of two rival institutions: the Newcastle College of Medicine and the Newcastle University upon Tyne College of Medicine and Practical Science. The former was recognized by the Society of Apothecaries in July 1851, the Royal College of Surgeons of England in October 1851, and approved by the University of London in January 1852 to submit students for London medical degree examinations. Later in 1852, this college became affiliated with the University of Durham, adopting the name “Newcastle-upon-Tyne College of Medicine in connection with the University of Durham.” It became the first medical examining body in the UK to introduce practical examinations alongside written and oral exams, awarding its first ‘License in Medicine’ in 1856.

In 1857, the two colleges merged, and the unified institution opened its first session on 3 October of that year. By 1861, the college introduced the degree of Master of Surgery, allowing students to obtain a double qualification of License of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, in addition to degrees in Bachelor of Medicine and Doctor of Medicine, which required residence in Durham. In 1870, the college further strengthened its ties with the University of Durham, becoming the Durham University College of Medicine. This change allowed residents at the college to count towards the university’s degree requirements, eliminating the need for students to reside in Durham for higher degrees in medicine and surgery.
