About B.K.L. Walawalkar Rural Medical College, Ratnagiri

B.K.L. Walawalkar Rural Medical College is situated at Sawarda village which is about 16 kilometres from Chiplun and 290 kilometres from Mumbai on Mumbai-Goa highway.

A medical college with 100 seats has been started from the year 2015 by S.V.J.C.Trust as there is a dire emergency to provide modern medical services to the rural population at their door steps. Medical students trained from this college are expected to offer their services to the local communities. This would then improve the overall quality of health-services in these communities.

Students will get an opportunity to carry forward the research already going on at B.K.L. Walawalkar Hospital. Thus, the main objectives of the Rural Medical College would be to achieve academic growth, provide good doctors in rural area who in turn would serve the rural population, give an impetus to research and thus achieve overall upliftment of the society as a whole.

Shri Vithalrao Joshi Charities Trust has been working for the last 50 years for social & spiritual upliftment of the poor. Skills Laboratory

B.K.L. Walawalkar Rural Medical College has a Skills Laboratory where students can practice and improve skills pre-specified in the curriculum. The purpose of the skills laboratory is to provide a safe and non-threatening environment for students to learn, practice and be observed performing skills in a simulated environment thus mitigating the risks involved in direct patient exposure without adequate preparation and supervision. The skills laboratory attempts to recreate the clinical environment and tasks which future health care workers have to perform with various levels of complexity and fidelity.

Central Library

Having spacious reading rooms which are well lighted and ventilated and have a sitting capacity of 200 students. Currently library has more than 8600 books and 60 National and International Journals are subscribed annually. The central library has a Digital Library having 25 P.C. with internet connectivity. It has facility for online M.U.H.S digital library access which has more than 13,000 journals and 1300 books available through internet. The library also has xerox and photo copy facility.  A central library which spreads over 2000 sq. m. area has a collection of approx 12000 books. Beside central library each department has its own Departmental Library for easy access of students.

Lecture Theatres

The Medical College has 3 air-conditioned Gallery type lecture halls with audio-visual aids to accommodate 120 students and 1 Gallery type lecture hall in hospital with audio-visual aids to accommodate 150 students.

Examination Hall

The medical college has separate, well ventilated examination hall with all amenities to accommodate 250 students.

Hostel facilities

Separate Boys and Girls hostel facilities are available. Boys Hostel has a capacity of 174 and Girls Hostel has the capacity of 240. The College has provision for 100% of the total intake of students in Hostels. Each hostel room has two occupants. The size of such room is 27 sq.mt.
Each student is provided with independent and separate furniture which include chair, table, bed and full-size cupboard. Each hostel has a visitor room, a study room with facilities for computer and internet. There are recreational facility rooms having T.V., Music, Indoor games etc. and messing facilities for the students.

Cafeteria

Cafeteria and Canteen facilities are available for the comfort of patients and staff.

Sports Complex

A well-equipped Olympic standard sports complex is constructed in the premises of the medical college which has facilities for sports activities like Badminton, Basketball, Volley ball, Football, Table tennis and swimming pool. A modern Gymnasium and Gymnastic Hall is available. Full time dedicated staff including a Sports director oversee the functioning of the Sports Complex.

“B.K.L. Walawalkar Hospital” is located at about 16 Km from Chiplun on the Mumbai-Goa highways in the village of Dervan. The hospital is of 500 beds capacity. It is a multispecialty hospital with all modern medical services available under one roof. All the operation theatres are air-conditioned and include laparoscope, image intensifiers, different types of monitors & ventilators. These operation theatres handle a range of surgeries including simple procedures for treatment of hernia to complicated ones like that for knee replacement, spine surgeries, and Cancer surgeries.
