About All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Guwahati

The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) – Guwahati, an autonomous Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare – Government of India, established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) in May 2017. The foundation stone of the Institute laid by the Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on May 26, 2017.

The Institute has set up with the aim of correcting regional imbalances in quality tertiary level healthcare and attaining self-sufficiency in graduate and postgraduate medical education. The Institute intends to develop model patterns of teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in all its branches to demonstrate a high standard of medical education to all medical colleges and other allied institutions in India.

AIIMS Guwahati will comprise of a medical college with an annual intake 125 MBBS students and a nursing college with an annual intake of 75 students. The hospital will deliver OPD and emergency services and will have a 750-bedded in-patient facility managed by speciality and super-speciality departments equipped with all state-of-the-art amenities. Dr. Chitra Sarkar, a renowned neuropathologist and former Professor of Pathology and former Dean (Research), AIIMS – New Delhi, nominated as the first President of AIIMS Guwahati, in March 2020.

AIIMS Guwahati started its first academic session on January 12, 2021, with a batch of 50 MBBS students and 21 faculty members across four departments from a temporary campus located at Narakasur Hill-Top, Guwahati. In 2022, the Institute further expanded – with the joining of the new batch of MBBS students as well as the faculty members of paraclinical and clinical specialty and super- specialty departments. The Institute now functions from its main campus located at Changsari, Kamrup (Rural) District, Guwahati, which spans an area of 189.2 acres comprising of Institutional Complex, Hospital Complex, Hostels, and Residential complex.

Facilities / Infrastructure in All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Guwahati

Central Library

Central Library in AIIMS Guwahati has been newly inaugurated on 23rd February 2023. Third floor of Medical College building designated as Central Library. It is fully air conditioned, with adequate lamination. Currently, the library is having seating capacity of 100 readers at a time. Almost 1200 physical books of latest edition have procured. It has a distinguished faculty and student reading area. A specific newspaper and magazine reading arena with 6 newspaper and 8 magazines has devoted to comfort reading of readers. Silence is strictly maintained. Leading E journals of around 238+ can accessed through Institute along with 193+ e books of latest edition. Referencing and article on request is also provided to the faculties

OPD SERVICES

The patient care services have been started via telemedicine from August 2022 and limited OPD for local residents started from September 2022. Most of the clinical departments are functional. Average OPD footfall at AIIMS Guwahati is around 535 patients per day at present. Services available include Day Care, Pharmacy (Amrit Pharmacy), Lab Diagnostics (Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology), Radiological Investigations (USG, X Ray).

IN-PATIENT SERVICES

The state-of-the-art hospital will provide high quality patient care services in 27 Specialties and 14 Super specialties including Cardiology, Neurology, Burns and Plastic Surgery, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Interventional Radiology etc. It will have an Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Unit, 16 modular Operation Theatres, Diagnostic Laboratory, Blood Bank, Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit etc. The Institute will also provide state of the art cancer care, advanced laparoscopy facilities, trauma care and advanced futuristic interventions like robotic surgery, organ transplantation, regenerative medicine, simulation lab etc.

Admission Process

Admission to the MBBS programme is based on candidates’ performance in NEET. Once the NEET results are declared, then the eligible candidates are called for counselling process.
