The University of East Sarajevo was established in 1992 under the name University of Sarajevo. The University inherits the tradition of the first higher education institutions in the region, dating back to 1882. The teaching process in the University started in the academic year of 1993-94. The Faculty of Medicine in Sarajevo was originally founded in 1944 as the first higher education institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1993, the faculty came under the University of Sarajevo and has been the same ever since. The faculty is located in Foča town, and it is a highly experienced and recommended medical school to study medicine in Europe.

Faculty building is around 6000 m², which is adequate space for carrying out the teaching process. The faculty includes two modern amphi theatres, many classrooms, the center for research, laboratories for histology, anatomy, pathology, chemistry, and biochemistry, and a clinical skills laboratory. Concerning the staff, about 240 professors and assistants participate in the teaching process. Most of them are directly employed by the university, and 30% of staff come from other BiH centers and the surrounding region.

The first three years of the program focus on building a foundation in medical sciences such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and microbiology. The next two years focus on clinical training and preparing students for real-life medical situations. The final year includes clinical rotations in different departments of a hospital, allowing students to gain practical experience and work with patients.
