About Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore

Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore started in 1955, utilizing the clinical facilities of the Government Wenlock Hospital and Government Lady Goschen Hospital. In 1961, the pre-clinical section started in Mangalore.

The Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore became an independent unit in 1977. Apart from the two Government hospitals, there is a teaching hospital attached to the College viz., the KMC Hospital, Attavar, established in 1992 with a bed strength of 500. The infrastructural facilities are comparable to international standards with seven big air-conditioned lecture halls fitted with modern audio-visual teaching aids including multi-media projectors and a modern, fully air-conditioned library with a seating capacity of about 500, and with internet facility. The library has over 10,000 books and subscribes to more than 350 journals annually.

In the year 2001, Centre for Basic Sciences started at Bejai for the first-year students. Apart from the Departments of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry, there are two lecture halls of capacity 250 each. Both ladies and boys’ hostels located within the basic sciences complex for the first-year students. The Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore provides hostel accommodation for its students in nine hostels. Out of these five are ladies’ hostels. There is also a Medical Education Unit which conducts Orientation program for students, interns and postgraduates, and also provides resource material for the teaching faculty members.

Hostels

• Hostels separated into blocks for girls and boys within the same campus.
• Rooms are available on twin sharing basis only with attached bathrooms.
• The Manipal integrated services (MIS) looks after the maintenance and other facilities.
• Hostel annexed to a Student Dining Hall managed by the Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration and run by the residents themselves through a duly elected Culinary Service In-charge.

Libraries

The Kasturba Medical College Central Library at Mangalore came into being with the establishment of the college in 1953. The library covers 2025 sq. meters on three floors and is fully air conditioned and has a seating capacity of over 400.

There are also small department level libraries in all of the institutes. MAHE strives to provide the latest and best collection of books, journals, online resources, dissertations to students for course work and research.

Sports and Fitness

Sports activities at Manipal Academy of Higher Education are supervised by the University Sports Council headed by the Pro Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor as the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson, respectively.

Each college also has a staff sports advisors who are part of this council. Every year, one of the Directors of Physical Education is elected as the Chief Sports Coordinator who oversees the university sports activities.

The University Sports Council organises inter-college sports events and makes selections for the university team for various inter-university tournaments. The council also organises staff sports events annually.

Eligibility & Admission Process for Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore
